strawberry season

I love this time of year. Almost the longest day, and at last our strawberries are ready. Hard to know whether to make jam or just to gorge ourselves on the fresh berries...

AAAAGGGGGGHHH - NO! don't make jam - that just boils all the goodness out of them. Enjoy them au naturale (c: with loads of cream and maybe a dollop of Maple Syrup.

Good to hear from you again blue'

... of course, you can't freeze them so if you have a large crop no point in letting them go to waste and jam is an excellent option (can't think of an alternative way to preserve them other than jelly, which is a difficult process). BUT I would be glad to help you dispose of them, if you were finding it a chore (c:

Madam Tallien, a great figure of the French Revolution, who was nicknamed Our Lady of Thermidor, used to take baths full of strawberries to keep the full radiance of her skin. (wikipedia)

Gorge, gorge, gorge ... yes you can do it!

This is a wonderful image - the reds or just so red and the berries look in immaculate condition.

well, what was the end result?
gorge or jam?

a bit of both in the end - we ate what we could and made really excellent jam with the rest (using St Nigel Slater's recipe - a little less sugary than most)

Am having great difficulty posting at the moment as our elderly pc is on its last legs. We're thinking of buying a Dell - any opinions would be most gratefully received..

I've just planted out some strawberry plants and hope that from next year we will have a bumper crop as well.

First time I've tried to grow them ..
